Engineering Diversity

Let's Talk About It! The 2019 Diversity Talks Series -

When is a Joke not a Joke? A talk with Dr Devorah Baum.

When is a Joke not a Joke?

Dr Devorah Baum will be at the Engineering Department to give a talk on “When is a Joke not a Joke?” We're living through hysterical times as history seems, once again, to be repeating as farce.  If you live any kind of life online then you'll have almost certainly felt the pressure to be continually witty, but who exactly is laughing now?  With reference to Jewish comedy as well as a number of other topical examples, this talk will examine the relationship between politics, history and joking.

Dr Baum is an Associate Professor in English Literature and Critical Theory at the University of Southampton. She is also attached to the Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non Jewish Relations. Her research has expanded on the academic interest of joking and laughter. She is the author of Feeling Jewish (A Book for Just About Anyone) and The Jewish Joke, and co-director of the documentary feature film The New Man.

All are welcome!

The talk will be followed by a drinks reception.
