We need to increase our outreach if we are going to encourage more girls to take the path that leads to a career in Engineering. This was very much the finding of the Department's recent Athena SWAN application and here is a great opportunity to do just that!
This summer, the Cambridge Science Centre <http://www.cambridgesciencecentre.org> gets its gears into action with Build It!. A special programme of events and exhibits for all ages looking at how to create fabulous machines and inventions. We will be running building workshops, getting all techno with our Sunday morning Robot club as well as showcasing cool new bits of science and technology. We are looking for individual/groups from the research and business community to participate in our “Meet the Scientist/Engineer” Programme.
The aim of the “Meet of the Scientist/Engineer” events is to expose science centre audiences, including potential young scientists, to key scientific and technological developments in a hands-on and accessible manner, through informal presentations, table-top exhibits and demonstrations. These events provide audiences with a better understanding of what scientists/engineers do, of the science involved and how research and technology developments impact on their lives.
. During a two hour time slot, you would show a product/prototype, run a demo and talk informally to small groups of members of the public about your research/job . Ideally, you would bring a physical object (product or
prototype) or run a demonstration about the research. Slides/images/videos should be kept to a minimum, and be used as illustration only.
. Our audience is mainly families with children (7-14), so explanations should be tailored for that audience
. We are looking for individuals or groups to come to the centre during the weekend days of the summer holiday and the weekend leading up to the holiday (July 20th -Sept 2nd). The two hour sessions would run from 11.30-13.30 on Saturdays and Sundays. You can sign up for either a Saturday or a Sunday or both. However, if you are interested in participating but can’t do weekends, do contact us and we’ll arrange for an extra session during one of the week days.
