What is Athena Swan?

Why does it matter?

The Department is committed to the principles of the Charter. Achieving the Silver Award shows potential staff and students that we are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive working environment. It also enhances our grant-winning potential: some government bodies require research partners to hold a Silver Award – and now we can say that the Department of Engineering is one of them.

What does applying for the Award involve?

The application process requires evidence gathering, self assessment and the formulation of a comprehensive three year action plan. The application form is then assessed and the Department notified if they have been successful.

Which Award does the Department hold?

The Department submitted its Silver application in November 2016, which was awarded in April 2017.

Previously the Department submitted its Bronze application in April 2013 which was awarded in September 2013.
